Major Crackdown on Spurious Medicines in Udham Singh Nagar, Authorities Seize Counterfeit Drugs and Wildlife Contraband

In one of the state's most significant enforcement actions against counterfeit pharmaceuticals, authorities have busted an illegal medicine manufacturing unit operating in Udham Singh Nagar district. The joint operation, carried out by the Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) and the State Drug Administration Department, resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of suspected spurious medicines, manufacturing machinery, packaging materials, and other incriminating evidence. The raid has raised serious concerns over public health and the growing challenge posed by counterfeit medicines entering the market.

According to officials, the factory was allegedly operating under licences meant for Ayurvedic and food products while illegally manufacturing and packaging medicines resembling well-known pharmaceutical brands. Investigators stated that the unit was producing medicines without the mandatory drug manufacturing licence, prompting immediate legal action against those involved. Preliminary findings indicate that the operation had the potential to distribute counterfeit medicines on a large scale, posing significant risks to consumers.

During the raid, officials recovered nearly one lakh tablets, around 15,000 bottles of medicinal syrups, packaging equipment, filling and sealing machines, labels, foils, and other materials allegedly used in the production process. Investigators are examining the seized products to determine their composition and identify the markets where they may have been supplied. Authorities believe the racket may have connections extending beyond Uttarakhand, and efforts are underway to trace the broader distribution network.

The operation also led to the recovery of wildlife-related contraband, including deer antlers, along with other suspicious items discovered during the search. Officials confirmed that the matter is being investigated separately under the applicable wildlife protection laws. The presence of wildlife articles at the premises has added another dimension to the investigation, with multiple agencies expected to examine whether additional offences have been committed.

Law enforcement agencies have registered a case under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and relevant provisions of criminal law. Investigators are continuing to examine financial records, supply chains, and business links associated with the accused. Officials have indicated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as evidence is analysed and additional individuals connected to the alleged operation are identified.

The crackdown highlights the state's continued efforts to curb counterfeit pharmaceutical operations and protect public health through coordinated enforcement. Authorities have appealed to consumers to purchase medicines only from authorised pharmacies and to report any suspicious products or illegal manufacturing activities. The investigation remains ongoing, with enforcement agencies working to dismantle the entire network and prevent counterfeit medicines from reaching the public.
