Samikssha Batnagar Steps into Theatre Production with Shikhandi, Set for September Premiere

Popular television actress Samikssha Batnagar, currently appearing in Rajan Shahi’s hit show Anupamaa, is expanding her creative horizons into theatrical production. Under her newly launched banner, Samikssha Stage Craft, the actress is mounting a grand musical stage play titled Shikhandi. Scheduled to premiere on September 26, 2026, at St. Andrews Auditorium in Bandra, Mumbai, the theatrical piece focuses on one of the most compelling yet frequently overlooked figures from the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Addressing her decision to select Shikhandi for her maiden venture, Batnagar shared that she wanted her primary independent project to center on a narrative requiring nuanced emotional depth. While popular culture has seen numerous adaptations of the ancient epics, the personal evolution, psychological endurance, and internal conflicts of Princess Amba's transformation into the warrior Shikhandi remain rarely dramatized in mainstream performing arts.

Bringing the legendary figure to life live on stage has proved to be an intense artistic endeavor for the actress. Rather than focusing exclusively on the martial aspects of the warrior, the production delves into underlying themes of public rejection, personal sacrifice, vengeance, and resilience. Batnagar emphasized that her intention is to present the vulnerabilities and lived experiences of the character, allowing modern audiences to connect with the human element driving the legendary legend.

Portraying a gender-fluid hero on stage also involves significant physical and vocal preparation. Recognizing that transgender roles have historically been performed by male actors in traditional classical theater, Batnagar is working closely with director Kulvinder Bakshish Singh to refine her voice modulation, posture, and physical expression. The production incorporates rigorous stage choreography, including classical martial arts and sword fighting techniques, to ensure an authentic rendering of the character.

Despite the demanding preparation needed for live theater, Batnagar continues to balance her theatrical rehearsals with a demanding television shooting schedule for Anupamaa. Expressing gratitude toward producers Rajan Shahi, Vivek Jain, and her television crew, she noted that their support in adjusting daily schedules has allowed her to manage both professional commitments without compromising artistic standards.

For Batnagar, live theater continues to serve as an essential artistic foundation offering immediate feedback and creative growth. Supported by director Kulvinder Bakshish Singh, presenter Abhishek Narayan, and writer Ashutosh Dwivedi, Shikhandi represents a significant milestone in her artistic career, laying the groundwork for future stage productions under her banner.
