Talent Doesn't Have an Expiration Date”: Somy Ali Defends Govinda Amid Ageism Criticisms

Former actress and humanitarian Somy Ali, founder of the NGO No More Tears, has publicly defended veteran actor Govinda amid rising social media criticism regarding his decision to accept roles alongside younger female co-stars. Drawing from her personal and professional history with the actor—having previously co-starred with him in the 1995 action drama Andolan—Ali stepped forward to challenge the prevailing ageist commentary surrounding his continued work in Hindi cinema.  

Taking to social media, Ali praised both Govinda and his wife Sunita Ahuja, describing the actor as one of the most humble and exceptionally gifted talents in the Hindi film industry. She pushed back firmly against the idea that pairing with younger actors warrants criticism, emphasizing that choosing to remain active and pursuing employment in a highly competitive market should command respect rather than public ridicule.  

Ali argued that an actor's intrinsic value is grounded in professional dedication, talent, and perseverance rather than physical age or the age of onscreen collaborators. In her view, securing fresh professional opportunities in an industry where doors often close over time should be celebrated as a testament to staying power, asserting that every artist deserves the space to demonstrate their ongoing artistic value.

Addressing a broader trend within public discourse, Ali highlighted how age is frequently weaponized to marginalize seasoned performers who are simply continuing their craft and earning a living. She expressed particular admiration for actors who show resilience by refusing to step back from the screen despite industry pressures and societal expectations suggesting they should retire.
