Tragedy in Gaulapar: Poisonous Gas in Underground Water Tank Claims Lives of Mother and Two Sons

A profound pall of gloom descended upon the Gaulapar area in Haldwani as a horrific domestic accident resulted in the immediate death of three members of a single family. The incident occurred late Tuesday afternoon in Manpur West village, where an underground concrete drinking water tank turned into a fatal trap due to the accumulation of toxic gases and extreme oxygen depletion. What was intended as a routine home construction task quickly escalated into an uncontrollable tragedy, leaving the entire local community in shock.  

The ordeal began around 5:30 PM when 46-year-old Dharmendra Bisht descended into the newly constructed underground water tank using a ladder to dismantle the wooden shuttering framework. Due to the sealed enclosure remaining covered for several days, highly toxic gas had accumulated inside. Within moments of entering, Dharmendra lost consciousness due to the lack of oxygen. Sensing a delay and receiving no response from inside, his younger brother, 40-year-old Khushal Singh Bisht, climbed down to assist him, only to be instantly overpowered by the poisonous fumes and rendered unconscious as well.  

Panic gripped the premises when neither of the brothers called back or emerged from the dark pit. Driven by maternal instinct and desperate to save her sons, their 65-year-old mother, Saraswati Devi, went down into the tank despite the immense danger. Tragically, she too fell victim to the deadly environment almost immediately. Hearing the family's frantic cries prior to their collapse, a local vegetable vendor named Bhoj Ram rushed to the site and attempted a rescue, but he was also knocked unconscious upon entering the tank.  

Alarmed neighbors gathered rapidly at the spot and managed to pull all four individuals out of the underground pit. While Bhoj Ram regained consciousness after breathing fresh air, Saraswati Devi and her two sons remained completely unresponsive. The victims were urgently rushed by local residents and police teams to Dr. Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital in Haldwani, where attending medical officers pronounced all three family members dead on arrival.  

Local police officials and administrative authorities reached the scene shortly after the report was logged to secure the premises and initiate preliminary inquiries. According to senior police officers, a portion of the tank's concrete slab had to be broken to fully vent out the trapped hazardous gases before safely inspecting the interior. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations to confirm the exact toxicological causes of asphyxiation, while district officials have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution and ensure proper ventilation before entering enclosed spaces, wells, or underground tanks.
